Beats Before Bars was founded by Simon Næsse, Sveinung Nesheim and Jørgen Hyldmo Jansen to publish the debut album of Proper Johnson (formerly Funktioneers), a band they formed in 2002.

As a record label, Beats Before Bars aims to provide new, Norwegian music, primarily related to funk, soul and jazz.

Beats Before Bars is a non-profit enterprise.
